The storage hardware tested was a Dell Compellent Storage Center (SC8000) v6.1. This is a redundant controller pair, with redundant front-end and back-end connections. The front-end connections were fiber-channel based, over redundant fabrics, with 2 ports per VMWare 5.0 ESX host, and 4 ports per controller.
Each ESX server hosts 2 virtual machines (VMs) running Windows Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010 Jetstress. 2 x 14TB volumes and 2 x 800GB volumes are mapped to the ESX hosts to be used as VMFS datastores. The 14TB volumes are for databases and the 800GB volumes are for transaction logs. Each ESX server has a single 500GB datastore for the 2 server’s boot drive.
The disk connectivity is SAS 6Gbps. The spindle count is 177 disks for database, and 22 for logs, in each Storage Center. There are 2 Storage Centers, with independent disks, for complete isolation of database copies providing complete mailbox resiliency.
